Seastead City!

This design titled "The Swimming City" is the work of András Gyõrfi. The Swimming City was crowned the best overall design out of 41 entries in TSI's seastead design contest. András Gyõrfi is an architectural graphic designer from Eger, Hungary who earned the grand prize of $1,000 for his winning submission. For any readers that are unfamiliar with the term 'seastead', they are permanent living establishments on seas or oceans.

One of my first thoughts about the design was that people could fall off easily. There is a slight wall enclosing which is de-emphasized by the bird's eye view. Even with the small wall enclosing, I wonder if that is sufficient especially if there are extreme weather conditions. The seastead platform itself was designed by professional naval engineers for stability up to 130 feet above the platform.

In the TSI (The Seasteading Institute) contest, entries varied from hotels, resorts, research facilities, universities, medical facilities, stadiums, observatories and more. "The Swimming City" was labeled under 'resort' although the structural designs simply remind me of a city block.

How cool would it be to go to a university on one of these platforms? Make sure you don't miss the boat ride and be late for class!

An interesting note about seasteading is that platforms can be built outside the sovereignty of nations. Whoever lives on those platforms will essentially be self governing free from the laws of any country.
